I don't think frugality is hurting our economy. In fact, frugality is the need of the hour to survive the crisis.

Yeah but if all of the businesses were doing better, employees would be getting paid more thus they would be spending a little more so it has to be a factor.

It is frustrating that part of this ecomomic downturn is blamed on consumers being unwilling to spend money that THEY DON'T HAVE!!!

I agree with @heidi. There is nothing wrong with being frugal. The poor economy is a result of greedy lenders and poor regulation, and yes, on part of the consumer. But don't blame the consumers for the whole bad enchilada!

The money saved through frugality doesn't disappear - it's invested either in an account at a bank, in stocks, bonds, in something. Sure, spending is down, but at the same time, the bottom line of those banks that keeps taking a pounding lately gets a little help.
