Nice article. The current rush of society to coercive, nation-wide solutions to our every problem is the result of fear and lack of imagination. And you certainly can't maintain a great nation without imagination, or when fear replaces wisdom.

One could also say that the current rush of society to wider government enforcement is the result of massive fraud and exploitation on the part of the financial corporations......I think AIG proved just how imaginative you can get with financial speculation and we are all paying the price for it. Blaming the government in this case is like blaming the janitor who comes in to clean up the mess after the fact.

No, MoneyRates, not when the only reason AIG could do it was because the government was happily crediting them with non-existent money whenever AIG managed to land another loan customer. Sure, the corporations could have been responsible and declined the Fed's offers. But if they had been playing with real money instead of silly money, they could never have leveraged themselves like they did. No business would have ever loaned them so much money if it Fed wasn't in the game. Not to mention, if the Fed wasn't loaning money out at below-market rates we individuals could have been getting higher rates of return on safe investments, thus improving our ability to plan for our own retirements.
