When Gordon Brown sold off half the UK gold reserve in 1999, us old-fashioned types wanted to scream with frustration. It turned out we were right, as he sold low and the UK has been left with a dangerously low bullion reserve. Besides gold is always good in the downturn he doesn't seem to have seen coming.
