* Cash for Clunkers: Is It Worth It?

By now we all know what the cash for clunkers program is... but is it worth it? I go over two separate instances where the voucher would entice someone to buy new over used.

Great analysis of the economics. Given the environmental benefits of better fuel economy and the environmental costs of manufacturing, it would be interesting to see an environment blog do a similar eco-analysis.

Agreed.

As far as environmental aspects are concerned, I have a feeling that destroying a car to buy a new car has a negative effect. It would probably be better (environmentally speaking) to drive that car for a few more years.

However, if the car is getting to the end of its life cycle and doesn't have a few more years left, the eco-friendliness might tilt in favor of getting the more fuel efficient car.

Not sure, though, so I would love to see an eco-analysis, too!

The pell mell rush to take vehicles off the streets is going to constitute an incredible waste of resources. Thousands of perfectly good vehicles will be taken off the streets and crushed. Is that environmentally responsible? One would think not. There are many vehicles that that have low emissions, and are very good vehicles that will consigned to the crusher to satisfy yet another political agenda. That will also ave the effect of tightening up the market for used cars, driving prices up, so those that don't want to or can't spend the money to buy a new vehicle will have far fewer choices.

In addition, we will spend tax money so that those who cannot afford, or would rather not buy a new car will help those that are buying one.

Way to go, Obama!
