I am on board with this, just for the signal of security it sends. Anybody know how long it has been at the current level?

Yes this is a necessary measure in the current climate in order to encourage Americans to save more and avoid potential additional disruption to the banking sector if this temporary increase was to expire at the end of this year. I believe FDIC insurance limit was raised to $250K in 2008.

This simply means the FDIC will go broke faster. People should hope that their bank is the first one to go belly-up, because after a couple dozen go, there won't be money left in the FDIC.

I've got an idea... why not insure up to infinity? Also, we should look into insuring against sad days, mud puddles, and lost buttons.

It was raised from $100K to $250K in 2008 and I think it's a wise move for a variety of reasons. It's also an insurance that is charged for by the FDIC, so they can raise the rate when they feel it's appropriate. The "to infinity" argument can be turned around the other way, why have it at all? Because people don't want to have to analyze the balance sheet of their bank.
