Dos the UK have eminent domain laws, like those in the US? If the airport project was so important, one has to wonder why the city of London didn't just outbid Greenpeace?!

I thought they did have eminent doman laws. Maybe not. (I do recall reading something about the Corporation of London being a section of London that is actually a sort of city-state. But that's neither here nor there.)

p.s. For those who are interested, it's worth realizing that London (UK) and The City of London are two different things.

The City of London (aka The City - home to the UK equivalent of Wall Street ) is a small city within London, dating back 2,000 years to the capital's birth. It is run by the Corporation of London, and over the centuries has done some very weird things in the context of UK law. Greater London (the 10million strong city) is made up of boroughs etc like other big cities around the world.

Not super relevant, but thought might be interesting to some.
