Will Dropping Gas Prices Bring Back the SUV Craze?

Short answer: no. Long answer: the SUV craze of the late 90's and early 21st century came into play from the perspective that they were safer and more practical.

I think a lot of people felt a lot of pain with higher fuel prices, they'll probably not run to SUVs so quickly.

I think that bigger is no longer better and the only thing that can bring back SUVs is if they can be run on cheap alternate fuel. Or if the US does some more heavy drilling in Alaska.

Definitely not. People have finally realized that gas is finite, and having an SUV is just a huge money sink. Couple that with environmental concerns, and I think the SUV is dead. There's still a market for the mini van etc, but no more straight-up gas guzzlers.

I think the big thing is that we just don't trust gas prices anymore. It's like, wait a minute, they were rising for two years -- but they just dropped off suddenly?! In that case, twelve Hummers, please!

Even if I had the money, I'd never buy an SUV - not even if Al Gore were there at the dealership to sell it to me :) If I want a gas guzzler, I want it to at least have some style.

A couple notes: Dodge is not renewing the Durango/Aspen, even though it just launched the hybrid version. GM has scrapped plans for the next Tahoe/Suburban/Escalade platform and is closing the plant too. Looks like they'll just let this version run its course.

But not all is lost for trucks and big SUVs. Sales are up 14% or so this month thanks to falling gas prices and huge incentives.
