Amen. A good friend of mine LIVES BY the broke mentality. He's 34, lives at home, only works if it's something fun (tv extra work), always squeezes hook-ups out of people (until he no longer can), hangs out with DJ's and scenesters, and name-drops. It's hard for me to be around that type of person. I truly believe it stems from very low self esteem, in which case only that person can will themselves out of the broke mentality.

Sometimes they can't even do that because they fool themselves into believing that they caught a bad break, else they'd be successful. They say it so often that they believe it. Unfortunately for them, they are the only person that does.

I think you're right - sometimes it becomes a mentality that just takes over and you start believing it.

you guys are totally right. it's sooooo about perspective. have you heard the saying, "poor is a state of being. broke is a state of mind." basically, you can be the richest person in the world and have no money. but broke people are broke and will stay broke because of the way they see the world. much of it i think is a victim mentality. "the world is against me." "nothing ever works out my way." "it doesn't matter what i do, nothing will go right, so i won't even try." the reason they stay this way is because there's NOTHING anyone else can do to help them.
