You really hit on some good points. When I was a paralegal at an Estate Planning firm, I cannot tell you how many people I saw come in with exactly those same issues. It's truly unfortunate how many people either simply fail to plan or seem as though they are actually planning to fail without even realizing it.

The saddest thing that I had to deal with when working as a paralegal was seeing so many women coming in as widows. They were sure their husbands had their affairs in order and they would be taken care of, and such was just not the case. The debt they thought would be gone was still there, the pension they thought would sustain them was only a drop in the bucket, and they were just devastated. Then, on top of their newly opened wounds that were created by the death of their loved one, they are trying to learn about finance for the very first time.

Yes, it used to be true that you could hope to see a steady increase in your earnings as you moved through professional life. However, with today's economy, that's just not a reality anymore. So many people think investing means they can automatically see a 10% return on their investment. Retirement planning is so important. With people living longer, the amount needed to sustain a retirement has increased, and unfortunately many people are waiting too long to grab the steering wheel to their own financial destinies.
