The textbook myth is the biggest scam of all, especially when professors insist that you use the textbook that they authored, because they receive a royalty on sales. In my experience, professors will "update" the textbook every couple years (consisting of trivial changes) and then request that you buy the most recent edition.

The textbook "updates" are usually more relevant examples or something along the lines. If you really think about it, content is timeless. If you become a Nurse in 2004 and someone else becomes a Nurse in 2008 you will both know the same material. This applies to any program or course. Content should be timeless not changing every 6 months. How inconsistent would an education be if content always changed?

I take your general point Studenomist, but I think nursing is probably a bad example. I know for a fact that here in the UK what nurses get taught has changed a lot in recent years. (Family member became a nurse).

For physics and maths and stuff like that I totally agree with you and The Kritz.

More difficult is semi-generic stuff for programming and similar. (E.g. Object orientated programming principles may be timeless but over a few years implementation and standards etc may change).
