Whether you’re a frugal person in general or not, you might be sitting on a goldmine. Chances are, you’ve got some items lying around that you no longer use. Selling items you no longer use is a good way to put some cash in your pocket.

Garage sales are a great way to earn some extra money. Everybody has stuff lying around that they're not using, so why not let someone else put it to use and you can earn some cash at the same time. Be sure to put up several signs announcing the sale. If you can guide people from a nearby busy street or intersection, make sure your signs are legible. Too often people in tiny, hard to read print. It might be right in front of you when you're writing it, but remember that the people you want to see your signs will be driving past fairly quickly, or be stopped at the light across the street, so your writing needs to be readable from a distance. And don't forget to publish an announcement in your local paper for several days at least a week in advance. Include the dates and times of course, but also a list of some of the items, or types of items, you're selling, to attract the people who are interested in buying those items. You'll have better sales if you do that. Thursdays and Fridays are generally the best days for a garage sale, but don't hesitate to stay open for the Saturday shoppers, too! Good luck.

I hate garage sales. They are a great way to spend hundreds of dollars of my time to earn at best a hundred dollars of cash. Much better spend that time doing what I get paid better for, and give the goods to someone less well-off than us. If there are a couple really big items, they can always be sold through Kijiji or Craigslist.

eBay has been a standby for me. What's worked for me is taking good care of my stuff beforehand, keeping any boxes and manuals, and (most importantly) taking decent photos from different angles.

Craigslist works for items you need to sell off quickly, assuming you don't mind meeting up with a stranger. (Then again, they have to do the same thing!) My tip for this: bring a friend along so you're not alone!

Facebook Marketplace works for selling to people in your network, especially if you're on a college campus. Like with Craigslist sales, bring a friend so you're not alone, and meet in a well-trafficked area.

If you have garage sales or yard sales, don't forget to submit them at the garage sale section of Craigslist.
