Our Schools Should NOT Teach Personal Finance To Our Children

Parents are responsible for training their own children. It is not the responsibility nor fault of the public school system - although I decry the majority of their policies and practices - it is the fault of parents.

All teaching is the responsibility of the parents. But we delegate a lot of teaching (academics) to the schools because some of us (like me) are inept at teaching. I have no problem with teaching personal finance in the schools, but that is soemthing we also teach at home.

The same parents who are incapable of teaching their own children are often the ones who scream loudest that teachers didn't do this or that to/for their child. Because they feel insecure about their own abilities. Not always, but sometimes.

But that said, I disagree. School is theoretically an ideal place for this. So many people are in debt because they are not learning personal finance at a basic stage in their development.

So train even just one teacher per school. Or if you're adamant about teachers being unqualified, invite "Financial Experts" to come in on their own time (possibly to qualify for some tax credit. Make it a regular workshop that each student needs to attend X times per school year.

There is no better stage for this than school, since most parents themselves are unqualified, and not everyone watches TV. Still, one other option is that colleges have perosnal finance workshops that credit card companies must give on campus. (I.e., the same companies trying to give card to students.)

This is NOT unmanageable. Example: University of Waterloo has a mandatory "how to write a resume" workshop. It was because of this course that my resumes often snagged me positions, when I was up against candidates of equal skill. Why not do something similar for personal finance? This is an important facet of life
