Thank you. One of the things that struck me last night during Obama's speech was how he made it clear that he can't do it, and that everyone needs to help out. While he seems to want to help people, the reality is that we have to be ultimately responsible for our own destiny -- especially in the realm of personal finance. No matter who is president, we should be practicing good fundamentals in our personal finances.

This article goes to far. Of course neither Obama nor Congress can "save" us, and no is (or should) be expecting that. But that doesn't mean success hinges completely upon the actions of the individual. Government plays a critical role in shaping the institutional, financial and political reality that we must carve out our success in. Good government is neither necessary nor sufficient for individual success, but bad government can go along way to making it difficult to achieve.

Bad government can certainly go a long way to making it difficult to achieve. It already has. We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world. I'm not trying to cover that up. But aside from that, we also have the highest level of opportunity. We can't ignore that.

I've always looked at the United States as the land of opportunity - something my father always drilled into my head, and something I was relaying to an American friend this morning. I never look to any president to "save us", but some presidents (e.g., Clinton) do seem to leave in a wake of prosperity.

Good article. I think a lack of personal responsibility is one reason why we're in this mess...it's frustrating that the same people that complain about the recent bailout want to know what the government is going to do for them.
