When employees have a question about retirement, it usually isn't long before the term "401(k)" is mentioned. From their beginning in 1978, when congressional action led to section 401(k) being added to the Internal Revenue Code, the popularity of employer-sponsored, defined-contribution plans hasn't stopped growing. Today, the vast majority of businesses that offer employees a retirement plan provide it in the form of a 401(k) rather than as a traditional, defined-benefit plan.
