When to challenge an error on your credit report?

My fiance and I are planning to buy a house within the next few months. We recently submitted a preapproval application with our bank and I finally convinced him to get a free credit report from annualcreditreport.com. We discovered that there is a incorrect item on his report from about 7 years ago that is due to go off his report in April

When my wife and I bought a house a while back we went thoroughly through our credit reports. I noticed a few errors and were able to get most of them corrected. I was also able to pay off a few balances that needed to be paid. One item, though, was actually a car loan error. After several phone calls I was able to get it corrected. Even though things are going to go off of your credit report soon I would still probably try to get them corrected.

I once tried to get something corrected but the credit reporting company made as complicated as they possibly could. After an hour (overtime on my lunch break), I got fed up and left the office.

Despite my not doing so, you have to stand up for yourself. The fact is, credit reporting companies do cut corners and sometimes don't change items that are supposedly to come off "automatically".

If you’ve never checked your credit report, now is a good time to do so. Errors that you're unaware of can prevent you from getting good rates on a wide range of services. In fact, this situation is more common than you might expect: It’s estimated that as many as 80% of credit reports contain errors. Errors range from the minor (misspelled name or former address) to the serious (accounts marked mistakenly as past due or in default). Fortunately, you can correct these errors though it is going to involve you doing some paperwork. But we all know that credit cards are very useful but considering the things that happened maybe you yourself will be the one to decide.
