Not sure why this is most Tip'd? It seems like a pretty basic comparison between two electronic devices that the author is using a basis for a surprisngly broad claim. Not that I have a strong opinion on the matter, but as long as people remain addicted to the "crackberry," I think RIM will be just fine.

It's an unfortunate headline to be sure and there will be no loss of life in this corporate battle but there is some logic at the heart of this argument. In my view RIM is an engineering culture that values corporate relationships with carriers over the user experience of humans that use their devices. Apple is an engineering culture as well but with the added advantage of decades of experience in industrial design, ergonomics and building simple and powerful user interfaces. In my view the "phone" part of the equation will matter very little in the battle between these two companies. Trajectory of this market space is aimed squarely on the "Mobile Internet Device" category (MIDs) that do voice / VOiP as well as a plethora of existing and emerging connected services. With a simple and powerful multi-touch user interface (which is full a full blown version of OSX) running on handheld devices like the iPhone / iPod Touch Apple will smoke RIM in this contest. Apple's multi-touch user interface (OSX) is also clearly part of Apple's stealth strategy to dominate this space and why I doubt they'll offer any kind of NetBook (or IBM PCjr version of a laptop). It's important to rise above the market noise of comparing specific devices and start looking at the respective UI's (and device usability) from each company. If you'll pardon the location based pun: Apple's MultiTouch UI is destined to be RIM's "Waterloo".
