Stocks slumped Monday despite clear progress in the U.S. capitol toward passage of a Wall Street bailout package hammered out over the weekend. The deal has raised traders’ confidence that an economic calamity will be averted. However, many remain nervous that a global slowdown - ugly and persistent but short of an all-out disaster - is underway.
