I call BS. I call it on the Penn article and on this one. It's a pet peeve of mine---people claiming that blogging is a nice part time or even full time job. Good luck with that and in most cases, be ready to make pennies per hour. Unless you are one of the lucky few, blogging will not make you rich. Sorry.

OK, I just reread and I was a bit hard on you. You did cast doubt on Penn's claims. Still, we need to get away from encouraging people to think that anyone can make blogging into a full time career. I believe the average income for bloggers per Technorati is about $80.

I'm going to have to chime in and say YES, MoneyRates is correct ($80 is probably generous though). I happen to have written for some VERY VERY high authority blogs in the past (and present).

Your success as a "blogger" comes if you own a blog network, like Gawker or Weblogs Inc. If you're a mere writer, you're not going to make $75k a year. Heck, if you even make 5 digits a year, you should consider yourself lucky.

The one thing blogging does for you is that it establishes you as a credible expert. You may get clients, press mentions, and whatever. I personally got a lot of clients because of my blog, but I don't really make money on my blog.

MB - Never claimed that blogging will make you rich, though if you work at it. it can provide a nice source of side income. Still requires work though, not easy street by any means.
