I love this question. Married couple, 3 kids. The $3000 child credit? If we go bottoms up, the first $1700 covers $17000 worth of income, (it's the 10% bracket) and the $1300 covers $8667 at 15%. In other words, if they had $25,667 in taxable income and realized that credit is there, the credit negated the tax on this amount. They also get $11,400 in a standard deduction, and $18,250 in the 5 exemptions, for $29,650 in total untaxed income. The effect is that, all else aside, $55,317 gross is completely not taxed.
